CHARLIE RICH
The last in the royal line of Sun Records superstars, Charlie Rich could
hold his own with the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash
before him. Rich's "Lonely Weekends" ripped through the national charts in
1960 like a buzzsaw in one of Sun's last assaults on the Top Twenty. The
Arkansas native, who became known as the Silver Fox, would duke it out with
the Beatles and Stones in 1965 with his hip-swinging smash "Mohair Sam",
then settle into a fertile country career by 1973 with "The Most Beautiful
Girl in the World".
But this 180-gram vinyl LP features Charlie Rich at the
peak of his ripsnorting early powers, once again fulfilling Sun Records
owner Sam Phillips' often-stated desire for a white man who sang with the
soul and power of a black man.
