LEE HAZLEWOOD
In 1967, Lee Hazlewood turned in the tapes for this third solo album for MGM Records. However, although the quirky singer-songwriter was currently in the midst of a string of hits written for and occasionally sung with Nancy Sinatra, his label rejected the finished album and released Hazlewood from his contract.
A European LP issue slipped out briefly in the mid 80s, but for the most part, SOMETHING SPECIAL has remained all but unknown until this official release by the fine label Water Records.
In retrospect, after the deeply odd solo albums Hazlewood released until his 2007 death, SOMETHING SPECIAL sounds downright mainstream. Highlights include Hazlewoods sardonic version of "This Town," which Nancys dad Frank Sinatra made one of his definitive late-period songs.
