BYRDS
Following the enormous success of their debut single "Mr. Tambourine Man" and its followup "All I Really Want to Do," the Byrds were keen to record more selections from the Bob Dylan catalog.
They began sessions for their second album, Turn! Turn! Turn!, at Columbia Studios in Hollywood on June 28th, 1965 with multiple Dylan songs in contention as the next single. They initially considered "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and made two attempts to record it before it was ultimately rejected. "The Times They Are a-Changin'" was the next Dylan song recorded and Columbia Records was sure enough about this choice to have a 7" picture sleeve designed. The band lip-synced to this recording on an October 1965 Hullabaloo appearance (placed on a bizarre marsh set, surrounded by duck decoys and models in hunting gear holding shotguns, in a painfully obvious play on the "Byrds" theme). This song was also rejected as a single, although a rerecorded version appeared on the album. After further consideration, "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season)" was chosen as the next single and it went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The single's B-side, the gorgeous Gene Clark composition "She Don't Care About Time," was initially selected as the B-side for the rejected "The Times They Are a-Changin'" single.
That such a strong song could be relegated to a non-LP B-side says much about the band's internal relations at the time. Strife had risen between Clark and the rest of the members due to his royalty earnings. As the group's principal songwriter, he received a higher income from their records, sparking jealousy and causing the band to limit his album cuts. Of course, having the B-side on a smash single like "Turn! Turn! Turn!" still created a royalty windfall, further exacerbating an already tense situation. Add to that David Crosby's frustration at not having his songs recorded for the album and it was obvious that something had to give. And soon. After languishing in the vaults for over forty years, Sundazed Music is ecstatic to finally give "The Times They Are a-Changin'" b/w "She Don't Care About Time" its debut release as a single.
Featuring the original, unreleased recording of "Times," this edition also includes an exact recreation of the long-lost picture sleeve, unseen until one of four existing copies surfaced earlier this year! Sourced from the original Columbia mono analog tapes, this limited-edition single is a must-own for all devoted Byrds fans.
Exclusive release for Record Store Day 2011.
